What Is Charm?
Charm measures how an option's delta changes as time passes. That sounds abstract until you remember what dealers do with delta: they hedge it. As expiration approaches and deltas decay, dealers have to adjust those hedges - buying or selling the underlying even when price has not moved. Charm is the pressure created by the clock, not the tape.
Gamma tells you how dealers react to price movement. Charm tells you what they have to do as time passes even if price sits still. On expiration days the two can disagree, and when they do, charm often explains the drift that gamma cannot. The Fourth Lens
DealerEdge renders charm as its own lens on the same strike grid you already read - switch from GEX to Charm and the heatmap repaints. The Charm lens deliberately uses a different color language so you never confuse the two: purple for negative charm, amber for positive charm. GEX keeps its own scale; charm keeps its own.
The single most useful object on the lens is the strongest charm strike - the concentration point with the most intense color. Everything in the read flows from where that strike sits relative to current price.
How to Read It
- Amber above price: time-decay hedging pressure pulls toward that strike - a potential upside drift target.
- Amber below price: the same pull, pointed lower.
- Purple above price: potential overhead pressure as hedges adjust.
- Purple below price: potential downside pressure.
The rule that keeps the read honest: do not use color alone. A bright strike means nothing until you locate it relative to price. Concentration plus location is the read; color by itself is decoration.
When Charm Matters Most
Charm strengthens as expiration approaches, because that is when deltas decay fastest. Practical priority list:
- Every 0DTE read. On expiration day, charm belongs next to GEX in your pre-trade routine.
- Front-week options when price keeps drifting in a direction the GEX map alone does not explain.
- Sizing decisions late in the session, when time pressure - not gamma pinning - is doing the work.
Charm on the Chart: Drift
You do not have to keep flipping lenses to carry the read onto your chart.
