NewsEdge Quick Start: Never Miss a Market Catalyst

Real-time news filtering with impact levels, preset configurations, and watchlist integration to catch catalysts first.

What Is NewsEdge?

NewsEdge delivers real-time market news and catalysts tagged by impact level, with 20-second auto-refresh and five preset configurations for different trading styles. It is the fastest way to know when something material has just hit the tape, and to decide whether that event is worth acting on or simply worth tracking as context.

Catalysts move prices. Knowing about a high-impact event five minutes before the broader market reacts can make the difference between a clean entry and chasing a gap. NewsEdge is built to give you that edge without drowning you in low-relevance noise.

When to Use It

Check NewsEdge before you open any position on a name where a scheduled event is pending: earnings, an FDA decision, a Fed speaker, or a sector catalyst. During the session, keep it running alongside OptionFlow and your charts so you know immediately when breaking news hits something you are watching. Use it to confirm a thesis, not just to generate trade ideas from scratch. A strong technical setup or flow signal with a catalyst behind it is more reliable than either one alone.

Your First News Check

  1. Open NewsEdge. You will see the main feed, the preset selector, the impact filter, and the real-time toggle. Enable the real-time toggle so the feed refreshes automatically every 20 seconds during market hours.
  2. Choose a preset that matches your session. Start with Market Moving if you want a broad view of the highest-impact news across all categories. Switch to Earnings Focus if it is earnings season and you are trading around reports. Use Biotech Catalyst if you trade binary events like FDA decisions.
  3. Set the impact filter. For most active trades, filter to High only. This removes analyst commentary and routine filings and focuses the feed on the events that tend to produce meaningful price moves. Add Medium when you have time to evaluate more gradual catalysts like analyst upgrades or guidance changes.
  4. Scan the feed for the tickers you are already watching or have open positions in. NewsEdge shows ticker, headline, impact level, and timestamp. Read the headline before assuming direction: an earnings "beat" with guidance cut is not straightforwardly bullish.
  5. When a High impact alert hits a ticker you care about, note the timestamp and switch immediately to OptionFlow to see whether flow is confirming the reaction. Speed matters on High impact events, so have your watchlist tickers ready.

Reading the Output

Every NewsEdge item carries three pieces of information: the headline, the ticker, and the impact level. The impact level is the most important filter for your attention.

High impact events include earnings beats and misses, FDA approvals or rejections, M&A announcements, CEO or leadership changes, and significant regulatory actions. These events reliably produce meaningful price moves, typically in the 2-10% range for large caps and larger for small caps and biotech. Speed matters on High impact news: the window between the alert and the first material price move is often measured in seconds to minutes. Have your execution ready before you act, not after.

Medium impact events include analyst upgrades and downgrades, target price changes, guidance updates, partnerships, and product launches. These tend to produce moves in the 1-5% range and play out over hours to days rather than seconds. You have more time to confirm with flow data and position sizing before entering. A single analyst action is often noise; multiple upgrades on the same name in a short window is a stronger signal worth taking seriously.

Low impact events are general commentary, research notes, routine SEC filings, and industry trend pieces. Price moves are usually under 1% and often zero. These are context-only items, useful for building a longer-term thesis on a sector or name, but rarely worth a trade on their own.

The five presets focus the feed on specific event types. Earnings Focus surfaces beats, misses, and guidance changes. Analyst Activity covers upgrades, downgrades, and initiations. Corporate Actions catches M&A, splits, and dividend announcements. Biotech Catalyst filters to FDA decisions and clinical trial results. Market Moving is the broadest preset, collecting High impact news across all categories for traders who want the widest real-time view.

For Example

For example, you are watching MRNA ahead of a Phase 3 trial readout. You have the Biotech Catalyst preset active and impact filter set to High. At 8:42 AM a High impact alert appears: "MRNA: Phase 3 trial meets primary endpoint." Before touching your order, you switch to OptionFlow and confirm aggressive call sweeps on near-term strikes. The flow and the news align. You now have a catalyst from NewsEdge and directional confirmation from OptionFlow. That two-source alignment is a much cleaner entry than the news headline alone, and it gives you a clearer thesis to manage the trade around if the move stalls.

Daily Workflow

Pre-market, before 9:30 AM: set the impact filter to High and use the Earnings Focus or Market Moving preset. Scan for anything that has hit overnight on names you plan to trade, and note which tickers have pending catalysts that could affect the open. At 9:30 AM, turn on the real-time toggle and keep NewsEdge visible throughout the session so you are not caught flat-footed by a breaking headline. During the session, watch for Medium impact analyst activity on names where you are already in a position or have a thesis forming. Before the close, scan Low impact items for context that might affect your next-day watch list.

Common Mistakes

  • Reacting before reading. A headline that says "beats estimates" is not automatically a buy. Read the full summary: guidance, revenue versus earnings, year-over-year context. Many sharp post-earnings reversals come from traders who bought the headline without reading the guidance cut buried in the same report.
  • Trading High impact news without a flow check. NewsEdge tells you what happened. OptionFlow and Snapshot tell you what the market thinks about it. When news and flow disagree, slow down and find out why before entering.
  • Leaving the real-time toggle off. The default state may not auto-refresh. Make sure the toggle is enabled during market hours or you are reading a stale feed and missing the timing advantage NewsEdge is designed to provide.
  • Treating Medium impact as High. Analyst upgrades and product launches rarely justify the same speed and sizing as an FDA decision or an earnings miss. Match your urgency to the actual impact level of the event.
